Feel lighter - take a break from social media for a day
We live in a world where almost everything is shared online. One quick scroll, and we’re suddenly pulled into everyone else’s highlight reel - vacations, wins, new jobs, perfect homes, even their morning coffee in the perfect cup and cream art, you know what I am talking about. Without meaning to, we start comparing our regular days with someone else’s BEST moments. And the more we scroll, the more we feel like we’re behind, missing out, or just not doing enough.
It’s not really our fault. As humans, we’re naturally wired to notice what others are doing. Evolutionarily, we’ve always lived in groups, so it made sense to care about where we stood in the pack. But back then, our “pack” was maybe a few dozen people(?). Now it’s not hundreds, or even thousands, it’s millions! And we’re seeing way more than just what’s real - we’re seeing the polished, filtered, best-of-the-best versions of everyone’s life.
That kind of constant comparison messes with us. It makes our own lives feel smaller, even if we were feeling fine just a moment before. And oddly enough, the envy we feel isn’t for the impossible stuff - it’s for the things that seem just within reach. That job we could maybe have, that lifestyle we almost relate to, that relationship that looks like what we once had or want to have. It stirs up a strange mix of hope and pain.
So here’s a gentle challenge for you today: take a break. Just for one day(please 🙏), step away from social media. No scrolling, no peeking, no checking who posted what. Let your mind breathe. Let your thoughts be your own. You might notice how much calmer you feel, how much more present you are in your real life. Or not, your mind might bombard with random thoughts because you’ve been ignoring them. Trust me, give it time, give it space, it will get better.
It’s about remembering / knowing that we don’t have to stay plugged-in all the time. A lot of times, disconnecting helps us reconnect - with ourselves, with our actual surroundings, with the small joys we miss while we’re busy watching others.
Try it. Even just for a day. See how it feels to not be pulled into the endless stream. Let yourself be where you are, without comparison. Your peace is definitely worth that much, right? You owe it to yourself to realize that your life is beautiful.
What to do next.
